Conventions used

At several places in the text the words mathplanet or athlonlinux appears. This doesn't have any special meaning. It's just the name of my machine and most likely will be different on your machine. Probably your command line will also look somewhat different. That doesn't have to bother you.

There are several points in the examples where I'm logged in as root, where this isn't even necessary. I know this is considered bad style, but it makes the examples more uniform, so I sticked to it. Apart from that a good portion of the commands mentioned only work as root, so you WILL need a root-password sooner or later, so if you don't have it, contact you system administrator.
